Aggregate equipment types

Crushers

Most aggregate production starts with the crusher, reducing the size and shape of the raw materials to meet specific product requirements. All crushers use impact or compression to break down the raw material into progressively smaller sizes and shapes.

Crushing stages

Depending upon the operation and desired final product, crushing involves some or all of these stages: primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary, and final. Crushers reduce material using either a back-and-forth or rotating motion.

Crushing methods

The types of crushers available include the following material reduction processes:

Jaw — Think of large, flat plates opening and closing on the raw material. These crushers are used for the initial or primary crushing of the raw material.

Gyratory — The crushers use a conical head, spinning with an eccentric motion to reduce the feedstock further, although they can be used as the primary crushing operation.

Cone — A conical-shaped head spinning inside a housing reduces the feedstock by compression. These crushers are used in secondary and smaller crushing.

Impact — These crushers spin vertically (VSI) or horizontally (HSI) and achieve material reduction using hammers and throwing the material inside the crushing housing.

Screens

A screening process between crushing stages sorts the aggregate into different sizes for further reduction or into a finished product. The most common screening methodology is a vibrating, configurable screen operating over a bin.

Conveyors

These invaluable systems get your raw material from point A to point B, connecting each production stage. Without properly operating conveyors, your aggregate production might suffer a serious slowdown.

Washing Equipment

Quarrying and reducing the raw material create dust that many purchasers do not want in their final product. Washing equipment removes the dirt, dust, and silt accumulated throughout the aggregate creation process, providing your customers with a clean product. Washing the product also helps to mitigate site dustiness during production and may be more than a nicety; it may be a requirement of your operating permit.

Also, with today’s supply chain issues, used or refurbished items often are the best route to the shortest process interruption.
